چکیده

In an experiment replicated over 2 yr, 149 suckled beef cows were administered Syncro-Mate-B (SMB), a 6-mg Norgestomet (NOR) ear implant (in situ 9 d) in conjunction with an i.m. injection of 5 mg of estradiol valerate (EV), and either 3.0, 4.5, or 6.0 mg of NOR, 2 d after estrus. All cows were artificially inseminated a t 48 h (timed insemination; TI) after implant removal (IR) and cows were reinseminated a t any estrus subsequent to 24 h of TI through 30 d. Blood samples collected before treatment, every 3 d through IR, and at TI were assayed for progesterone (P3. At TI, 44, 39, and 12% of cows treated with 3.0, 4.5, or 6.0 mg of NOR, respectively, had serum concentrations of P4 > 1 ng/mL (3.0 and 4.5 mg vs 6.0 mg, P c .011. Fifty-eight, 63, and 8 4 % of cows treated with 3.0, 4.5, or 6.0 mg of NOR, respectively, exhibited a synchronized (within 5 d of IR) estrus (3.0 and 4.5 mg vs 6.0 mg, P e .05). Pregnancy rates for the 5-d synchronized period were 38, 45, and 66% for cows treated with 3.0, 4.5, or 6.0 mg of NOR, respectively (3.0 and 4.5 mg vs 6.0 mg, P c .051. First-service pregnancy rates were 66, 71, and 79% for cows treated with 3.0, 4.5, or 6.0 mg of NOR, respectively ( P z .lo). Syncro-Mate-B with 6.0 mg of injectable NOR resulted in fewer cows with functional CL (i.e., P4 > 1 ng/mL at TI), more cows exhibiting estrus within 5 d of IR, and a higher 5-d pregnancy rate compared with SMB with 3.0 or 4.5 mg of injectable NOR.

Resumption of postpartum luteal function of primiparous, suckled beef cows exposed continuously to bull urine.

The objective of this experiment was to determine if continuous exposure to bull urine alters resumption of ovarian cycling activity of primiparous, suckled beef cows. We tested the hypotheses that interval from urine exposure to resumption of luteal activity and proportions of cows that resume luteal activity by the end of the urine-exposure period do not differ between cows exposed to mature ...

Norgestomet and gonadotropin-releasing hormone enhance corpus luteum function and fertility of postpartum suckled beef cows.

In Exp. 1,101 suckled beef cows were administered two injections of prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) 11 d apart. Cows in Group 1 received no additional treatment. Cows in Groups 2 and 3 received 250 micrograms of GnRH plus 47-h calf removal. Cows in Group 3 also received a norgestomet ear implant that was inserted 4 d after the first PGF2 alpha injection and left in situ for 8 d. The second ...

Hormonal and reproductive profiles of early postpartum beef heifers after prolactin suppression or steroid-induced luteal function.

Two trials were conducted with 24 primiparous suckled beef heifers to determine independent and combined effects of a prolactin-suppressing agent and exogenous steroids on serum hormones and reproductive activity. Heifers were assigned in groups of six to one of four treatments: 1. (C)subcutaneous control injections administered once a day for 2 days, followed by 2 days of no injections; sequen...

Effect of suckling and ovariectomy on the control of luteinizing hormone secretion during the postpartum period in beef cows.

Twenty-two mature pluriparous beef cows were randomly assigned to one of six treatments in a 2 X 3 factorial experiment in order to study the role of suckling and ovarian factors on control of the tonic and episodic release of luteinizing hormone (LH). Twelve cows remained intact (INT) and 10 were ovariectomized (OVX) within 4 days following the day of parturition (Day 0). The suckling intensit...

Ability of indomethacin to alter prostaglandin metabolite concentrations and to enhance the function of corpora lutea induced in postpartum suckled beef cows.

Fourteen anovulatory postpartum (38.0 +/- 1.9 d) beef cows that ovulated after an injection of 250 micrograms gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) in saline were used to examine the influence of indomethacin on luteal function. Beginning the d after GnRH, 6 cows were given intrauterine infusions of indomethacin for 14 d and the other eight cows received vehicle. After GnRH treatment, concentra...
